  • A professional counselor licensed by examination is exempt at the first renewal after initial licensure.
  • Up to 2 of the 20 hours may be met by unpaid counseling services to low-income people through a local health department or free clinic: one hour credited for every three hours of service.
  • Somebody holding more than one license from this board completes the hours once, not once for each license.
  • A resident in counseling attests each year to 3 hours in ethics, standards of practice or the laws governing behavioral science professions in Virginia.
